Cloud and FTP backup are two different types of backup solutions used to store data in a secure and easily accessible location. Cloud backup involves storing data on remote servers operated by a third-party service provider, while FTP backup involves transferring data to a remote server using the File Transfer Protocol (FTP).

Use-cases

Cloud and FTP backup can be used in a variety of situations, including:

  • Backing up data from a local computer or server to a remote location for disaster recovery purposes
  • Sharing data between different locations or users
  • Archiving data for long-term storage

In this post, we collected the best open-source cross-platforms cloud backup solutions.

Rclone is a command-line program that manages files on cloud storage, providing a feature-rich alternative to cloud vendors' web storage interfaces.

It supports over 70 cloud storage products and has powerful cloud equivalents to Unix commands. Rclone preserves timestamps and verifies checksums, and transfers can be restarted from the last good file transferred.

It also employs server-side transfers to minimize local bandwidth use and can mount any local, cloud or virtual filesystem as a disk on Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD.

Rclone mounts any local, cloud or virtual filesystem as a disk on Windows, macOS, linux and FreeBSD, and also serves these over SFTP, HTTP, WebDAV, FTP and DLNA.

Features

  • MD5/SHA-1 hashes checked at all times for file integrity
  • Timestamps preserved on files
  • Partial syncs supported on a whole file basis
  • Copy mode to just copy new/changed files
  • Sync (one way) mode to make a directory identical
  • Check mode to check for file hash equality
  • Can sync to and from network, e.g. two different cloud accounts
  • Optional large file chunking (Chunker)
  • Optional transparent compression (Compress)
  • Optional encryption (Crypt)
  • Optional FUSE mount (rclone mount)
  • Multithreaded downloads to local disk
  • Can serve local or remote files over HTTP/WebDAV/FTP/SFTP/DLNA

Use-cases:

  1. Off-site long term data backup
  2. Automate data backup via task scheduler
  3. Reduce cost and maintenance of local or network storage by deleting uploaded data
  4. Protection against hardware failure or ransomware

Data is stored in S3 bucket of your AWS account. You will pay only for what you use. S3 pricing is explained in detail link. You can further reduce the cost of S3 by moving objects to AWS Glacier by using lifecycle policies on a S3 bucket.
