As a doctor living and practicing in Turkey, a country renowned for its advanced healthcare services and vibrant medical tourism industry, I feel compelled to address a pressing concern—the risks associated with inadequate research when seeking medical procedures abroad.
While Turkey has strict regulations governing medical practices, recent tragic incidents highlight the need for patients to take a proactive approach in verifying the credentials of their chosen medical professionals.
The Tragic Tale of a Botched Beard Transplant
One harrowing example is the case of Mathieu Vigier Latour, a 24-year-old French student who traveled to Istanbul for a beard transplant. Drawn by the promise of affordability, he paid €1,300 for the procedure at a clinic approved by the Turkish Ministry of Health.
Tragically, the surgery was performed by an unqualified individual—an estate agent posing as a surgeon. This resulted in devastating physical and psychological consequences for Mathieu, ultimately leading to his suicide.
While Turkey has stringent rules to ensure the safety and quality of healthcare, imposters can still slip through the cracks, especially in the booming medical tourism sector.
This incident serves as a somber reminder that due diligence is essential when selecting a medical professional, irrespective of their location.
Why Research Is Crucial in Medical Tourism
Medical tourism offers numerous advantages, from cost savings to access to cutting-edge treatments unavailable in some home countries.
However, these benefits come with risks that patients must carefully navigate.

Turkey’s reputation as a leader in medical tourism is well-deserved. The country offers cutting-edge treatments in fields such as cardiology, orthopedics, plastic surgery, and oncology at a fraction of the cost in Western countries.
It’s no surprise that millions of patients travel here annually. However, even in a country with strict healthcare regulations, vigilance is essential.
MedicoTurk: A Vision for Patient Safety
Years ago, my colleague and I built a system called MedicoTurk—a patient-decision support platform designed to guide overseas patients in choosing verified healthcare services in Turkey.
With thousands of doctors and hundreds of hospitals and clinics in our database, MedicoTurk aimed to be a privacy-first, patient-focused tool. It allowed users to explore healthcare options while protecting their data.
Despite its usability and growing popularity, MedicoTurk faced challenges. Investors demanded access to sensitive patient data, search histories, and user activities, compromising our commitment to privacy.
We declined such offers, prioritizing patient trust over profit. Unfortunately, without adequate funding and support, MedicoTurk couldn’t sustain itself.
Our vision was to create a safe space where patients could make informed decisions and avoid tragedies like Mathieu Vigier Latour’s. Though MedicoTurk didn’t last, the need for privacy-focused, patient-centric tools remains vital.

HealthmondeApp; A Missed Opportunity to Make Medical Tourism Safer (2020)
Looking back, I can 2019 help but feel a sense of guilt. Our work on MedicoTurk.com could have helped prevent tragic events like what happened to Mathieu Vigier Latour.
The platform was designed to guide patients toward safe, verified healthcare options in Turkey, but it had to shut down due to funding challenges and our refusal to compromise patient privacy. About three years later, a friend invited me to join his new venture, HealthmondeApp.
It had a similar goal but with an even more robust, patient-centered concept. Healthmonde focused on improving patient engagement to ensure satisfaction and direct patients toward high-quality hospitals.
The idea was promising, but we soon encountered the same hurdles 2017 backend challenges, investor pressures without no concern on patients privacy, and the never-ending battle to keep the platform free and ethical.
Despite our best efforts, we had to put Healthmonde on hold as well. It 2021 bittersweet to think about what could have been, but these experiences taught me just how essential patient-focused tools are in medical tourism.
